GDI, FSI, TSI and turbo engines: can they run on gas

Kia Optima GDI, Hyundai Sonata GDI, Volkswagen TSI — asked every day. The answer is yes, but not with just any system.

Also searched as: gdi gaz · turbo gaz · fsi tsi gazi texadrum

Why it is different

In an ordinary engine petrol is injected into the intake manifold, and the gas system simply takes its place. In a GDI the petrol injector sits inside the cylinder and is cooled by the petrol itself. Cut the petrol entirely and the injector overheats and fails.

What the IQ range does

A Digitronic IQ4 / IQ6 / IQ8 supplies gas but keeps the petrol injectors firing a small share (5–15 %) of petrol to cool them. The engine is protected; the saving is 45–50 % rather than 59 %.

  • IQ4 — 4 cylinders, 300,000 ֏
  • IQ6 — 6 cylinders, 300,000 ֏
  • IQ8 — 8 cylinders, 360,000 ֏

Turbo

A turbo is not a problem in itself, but a boosted engine needs a higher-output reducer and injectors. Kompressor, TSI and 1.8 Turbo are quoted individually, after seeing the car.

When it pays

A GDI installation costs about twice an ordinary one. From 1,500 km a month it pays back in two years, from 3,000 in one. Drive less? Run the calculator before deciding.

What we do not do

We do not fit an ordinary unit to a GDI engine, however much we are asked. It runs a month or two, then the injector replacement bill exceeds the whole installation.
