Switching from CNG to LPG: when it is worth it and what changes

Bought a car on CNG and there is no boot? Or no station on your route? Here is the cost and the point of switching.

Also searched as: metanic hexuk gaz · od gazic propan · cng lpg poxarkum

Three reasons

  • The boot: a CNG cylinder weighs 60–90 kg and takes half of it; an LPG toroidal sits in the spare-wheel well
  • Range: 150–250 km per fill on CNG, 350–450 on LPG
  • Stations: LPG is in every district

What comes off

The CNG cylinder, the high-pressure line, the CNG reducer and filler. The ECU and injectors often stay if they are Digitronic in good condition — re-tuned for LPG.

What goes on

An LPG cylinder (toroidal or cylindrical), multivalve, vaporiser-reducer, filters, a low-pressure line, a filler. Then a leak test and tuning.

What it costs

It depends on how much stays. If the ECU and injectors stay: a cylinder from 35,000, a reducer, a multivalve and labour. If the system is all new: the standard installation price. Tell us the car and the old system and we quote exactly.

The old cylinder

A CNG cylinder with a valid test can be sold or kept — we hand it back to you. An out-of-date one goes for disposal.

Time

One to two working days, depending on how much old equipment there is to remove.

Can I keep both

Technically yes, with two cylinders. In practice it is rarely worth it: pick one by mileage.
