Gas cylinder testing and the certificate: what, when, why

The cylinder is the one part of the car the law wants a document for. Here is why, and how.

Why it is needed

A cylinder is a pressure vessel. Over time the metal fatigues and the valves wear. The test proves the cylinder still holds its rated pressure, with a margin.

What is checked

External inspection: corrosion, dents, weld condition. Hydraulic test: the cylinder is filled with water and pressurised above its working pressure. The multivalve and the 80 % stop.

  • LPG cylinder — every 2 years
  • Total service life — 10 years, then replacement
  • CNG cylinder — per its maker, usually 15–20 years, checked every 2–3 years

The certificate

After a pass you get a certificate with the cylinder number, the date and the next test due. Keep it with the car's papers: it is asked for at inspection and in an insurance claim.

Without one

You will not pass inspection, an insurer may refuse a claim after an accident, and some stations will not fill an out-of-date cylinder. Above all, you do not know the state of the vessel in your boot.
