How to choose a gas cylinder: size, type, price

The cylinder is the cheapest and longest-lived part. Choose it right once.

Toroidal: internal and external

An internal toroidal goes in the spare-wheel well — the boot stays entirely free. The external one hangs under the floor, on cars whose wheel well is outside. Sizes 32 to 89 l, 26,000–46,000 ֏.

Cylindrical

15 to 130 l, in the boot or under a seat. The largest volume, the cheapest per litre (20,000–34,000 ֏), but it takes space. The choice for estates, minibuses and older saloons.

How many litres

A cylinder fills to 80 %, so 42 l is really 34 l of gas, 300–350 km. 57 l is 45 l, 400–450 km. Choose by how often you want to fill, not by «which is biggest».

  • Compact saloon, city — 42 l
  • Mid-size saloon, crossover — 48–57 l
  • Large car, long routes — 60–65 l toroidal or 60–80 cylindrical

Before measuring

A toroidal's diameter (600, 630, 680, 720 mm) must fit the wheel well, its height (180–250 mm) under the floor. We measure the car, not the catalogue.

Price and paperwork

The catalogue has 52 cylinders priced in drams. Add the multivalve and the certificate (10,000 ֏) to the cylinder price. Every cylinder comes with a serial number and is tested every 2 years.

Is a used cylinder worth buying

Only with a valid test and a legible serial number. Otherwise a new one at 26,000 ֏ is cheaper than the risk.
