Propane or methane: which to choose in 2026

The most common question in the workshop. The answer depends not on «which is better» but on how much you drive, and where.

Two different fuels

Liquefied gas (propane-butane, LPG) sits in the cylinder as a liquid under low pressure. The cylinder is light, fits in the spare-wheel well, and filling stations are everywhere.

Methane (CNG) is compressed gas at 200 bar. The cylinder is heavy and large, stations are fewer, but the cost per kilometre is the lowest.

Cost per kilometre

Petrol is about 500 ֏/l, LPG about 210 ֏/l. Gas burns roughly 15 % more, so a kilometre on LPG costs less than half of one on petrol. On CNG, cheaper still, especially at high mileage.

  • Up to 2,000 km a month: LPG is plenty; the gap to CNG does not justify the heavy cylinder.
  • 3,000+ km (taxi, deliveries): CNG pays back its expensive cylinder within a year.

Range per fill

A 42 l toroidal LPG cylinder gives 300–350 km, a 57 l one up to 450 km. A standard CNG cylinder usually 150–250 km, which means filling more often.

The cylinder and the boot

A toroidal LPG cylinder is invisible — it sits in the spare-wheel well. A CNG cylinder weighs 60–90 kg and takes a good part of the boot. That is exactly why some drivers switch from CNG to LPG.

Our advice

Family car, city driving: LPG. Taxi, minibus, 150+ km every day: CNG, if there is a station on your route. Not sure? Tell us the car and the monthly mileage and we answer with numbers.

Can I change my mind later

Yes. Switching from CNG to LPG is standard work for us, and so is the reverse.

Which is safer

Both, if the cylinder is certified and tested. A CNG cylinder is built to stricter norms; an LPG one is simpler to service.
